The nautical sextant is a reflecting optical angle-measuring instrument. Its uses are:
1. Determine the ship's position by measuring the altitude of celestial bodies.
2. Measure the two horizontal angles between three known targets on the ground, and use a three-arm protractor to determine the ship’s position on the nautical chart.
3. Determine the distance by measuring the vertical angle to a target of known height.
